Amazon can now proudly announce a new member of their exclusive (yet oddly non-exclusive) self-published works group as reported via TechCrunch, the Million downloads mark is certainly a milestone when one considers that these are authors with no backing from a major publisher their medium of choice being the Kindle Direct Publishing market place.
Kindle direct publishing also allows for a 70% royalty program which can offer a sizable amount to those out there with a book to share, note the 70% is only available on sales in certain territories a list which Amazon add to from time to time for details see the small print here.
Also Amazon will charge for delivery based on the MB size of the file at a rate of $0.15 per MB which is deducted from the retail price of the publication, this is sure to be a winner for Amazon as right now the majority of eBooks are small many can be measured in KB terms but as media is sure to added and file sizes increase will Amazon take more of the retail price? – sure they will it’s their marketplace and these T’s and C’s will make sure of that, also as many Kindle’s come with 3G direct downloads for easy downloading direct to the device amazon have data costs to think of which will surely be on the increase as people will certainly move more towards not only the consumption of content but also the purchase of content on the device itself without the PC taking center stage in the distribution channel.
Recent reports of spam on the Kindle Direct Publishing have brought calls for tightening of the entry requirements and with ‘self-pubbers’ taking sales over the Million unit mark this is obviously worth the consideration.
Other members of ‘the club’ for their 1Million selling digital publications are Stieg Larsson, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Charlaine Harris, Lee Child, Suzanne Collins and Michael Connelly.
