What these Social Magazine / SoZine software providers are doing is allowing the user to define what is to be included in the digital edition. They do this by either allowing the user to enter the location of RSS feeds that they are interested in or accessing their social media profiles such as Twitter and see who they are following.

The sozine app will then use these RSS feeds or lists as a gateway to collect or scope the content. It is only when the content is selected that the apps would place advertiser. Now this is only my guess as none have placed ads within the content as yet. But this can be the only revenue stream that is really available as they are pretty much giving the app away for free.

It will be interesting to see what happens when they start placing ads with the content. I think that this might annoy the content owners. The New York Times had already lodged a complaint with Apple over one company for generating revenue from their content as they were selling the app with their rss feeds embedded inside the software.

Content owners will naturally revolt and retaliate when their articles are been scooped (without their adverts) and displayed within sozine applications with adverts from the sozine app owners. I look forward to seeing how this issue is resolved.

Not sure i see an advertising model here. I do understand the opportunity to publish an ezine based on the "interests" of a user gleaned from their use of Twitter, Facebook, Linked In etc. But i don't uinderstand where the ad revenue is? If it is being suggested that content will only be included if it is backed up with $$$ then how is it's content driven by the user?

Evan,

Thanks for the comments and engaging in the conversation. The learning algorithm sounds interesting. Can you elaborate on how the app accomplishes this? Is it a fuzzy logic technique? or does this occur when the user enters a keyword and the app searches for related feeds?

Also i have a question, as you are in this sector.

Last month a news aggregating application was removed from apple store due to a complaint by the NY Times. While the app didn’t scrap content, it had have advertising around the feed. The NY times felt that the makers of this app were generating revenue from their content and therefore lodged the complaint.

While the app was back online after a couple of day, I did find it interesting. While Apple may have given the software makers the go-head to continue selling the app on the store, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the NY times have forgotten about it.

What do you think of their attempts to block the display of content (that they are already pushing through RSS feeds) from been displayed in apps such as these and do you think that the software publisher has the right to place advertising in the layouts that also contain content from these news portals?

Thanks for the mention of our newly launched app, Apollo News. We think we are actually quite different from the other sources that you mention in that we have a learning algorithm in place that learns what kinds of articles and sources the users want and can bring that to them. Further, we help them discover new sources that they don't know about. Yes, we are not the creators of content, but we do help bring the right content to the right people and that is why we call ourselves the future of the newspaper.
Cheers,
Evan,
CEO, Hawthorne Labs (Apollo news)
